How to Check Your Spanish Nationality Application Status: “Cómo va lo mío”

You have submitted your application for Spanish nationality, but whenever you check its progress, the same message appears. Is this normal? Is a document missing? Should you keep waiting, or can you take action?
Checking your Spanish nationality application status allows you to see its current stage. However, effective monitoring also means reviewing official notifications and knowing when a response is required.
At Delgado Garrucho Abogados, we explain how to use “Cómo va lo mío”, what the main application statuses mean and what you can do if your application is not progressing.
Where can you check your Spanish nationality application?
The Spanish Ministry of Justice provides an online tracking service for Spanish nationality applications based on residence, commonly known as “Cómo va lo mío”.
You can access it here:
This service is intended for nationality applications based on residence. If you have applied through another route, such as nationality by option, you will need to check the appropriate tracking channel.
How to check your application step by step
Before accessing the service, have your NIE, the application reference assigned by the Ministry of Justice and your date of birth ready.
To check your application:
Open the official tracking service.
Enter your NIE exactly as it appears in your application.
Complete the application number and year following the instructions on the form.
Enter your date of birth and complete any security check requested.
Submit your enquiry and review the result.
Do not confuse your application reference with the submission receipt number or a Civil Registry reference. If an error appears, check the information you entered. A tracking error does not, by itself, mean that your application has been refused.
What do the application statuses mean?
The wording may vary, but these are some of the situations you may encounter:
Registered or being processed
Your application has been entered into the system and is being processed. This status does not indicate a specific decision date.
Awaiting reports
Reports needed to assess your application are being obtained. A lengthy wait at this stage does not automatically mean that there is a problem with your documents.
Under assessment
Your application is being examined. Although this indicates an assessment stage, it does not guarantee that a decision will arrive within a particular period.
Request for additional documents
You should open the official notification to find out which documents or explanations are required and the deadline for responding.
Granted
You should review the decision and arrange the remaining formalities, including the oath or pledge and the relevant Civil Registry procedures.
Refused or closed
You should obtain the full decision, examine its reasons and check the available options for challenging it.
Every application has its own circumstances. Another applicant receiving a decision earlier does not establish when yours will be resolved.
Checking “Cómo va lo mío” does not replace reviewing official notifications
It is essential to distinguish between checking your application status and receiving an official administrative notification.
If you have chosen electronic notifications, you should check the relevant channel, including the Dirección Electrónica Habilitada Única, or DEHú, Spain’s electronic notification portal. If you have a representative, confirm which communications they have received.
An email alert informing you that a notification is available should not be your only means of monitoring the application.
The notification date may determine when the deadline starts for responding to a document request or lodging an appeal.
What should you do if additional documents are requested?
Read the entire request before submitting anything. It may concern certificates, translations, legalisation requirements or information that needs clarification.
Check:
Exactly what the authorities are requesting.
The deadline for responding.
The correct submission channel.
Whether the documents meet the stated requirements.
Whether you have retained the submission receipt and copies of all attachments.
If you have already supplied the requested documents, identify the earlier submission, its date and its receipt. A well-organised response helps explain which document proves each requirement.
What happens if you have been waiting for more than a year?
The regulations establish a maximum period of one year to issue and notify a decision, calculated from the date the application reaches the competent authority. The calculation must be checked individually, taking account of any suspension of the procedure.
If that period expires without an express decision, the application is deemed rejected through negative administrative silence. This does not mean automatic approval, and the authorities remain obliged to issue a decision.
Where there is a delay, an administrative court challenge may be considered. Before deciding, the application dates, supporting documents and procedural history should be reviewed.
Taking legal action does not guarantee that nationality will be granted or that a decision will arrive by a specific date.
What should you do if your application is granted?
Approval must be followed by the remaining formalities. Review the notification and arrange the oath or pledge and the relevant Civil Registry procedures as soon as possible.
As a general rule, the regulations provide 180 days from the day after notification to make the required declarations. It is advisable to request an appointment promptly and retain evidence of the steps taken.
